When planning a family safari, there are a number of things one needs to consider and questions one should ask. What are the age limits for kids at lodges within certain areas? What lodges offer diverse activities for different family members? What are the travel times between different safari locations? Are there extra costs involved? What destinations are best for family groups?

We tend to find that the best destinations for a family safari include Victoria Falls, the Chobe National Park, and the Okavango Delta. A trip of such as this can easily be done in 8 days.

Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A The African Wild travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Arrive at Maun

Upon your arrival in Maun, you and your family will be met by a member of our friendly staff. They’ll meet you guys with a smile and then introduce you to the professional bush pilot who will fly you on towards your family friendly Okavango Lodge. There are a number of family friendly lodges in the Delta, and we’ll give you a number of different options depending on your needs.

Upon arrival at your exclusive lodge, you’ll be met with a song by the staff and a welcome drink, and then given time to settle into your comfortable lodging. Before /during /after afternoon tea your guide will cover your safari itinerary and activities and present the children with their young explorer kit.

Activities on offer are morning, afternoon and night game drives, motorboat cruises (all year round) or family fishing expeditions (Mar – Dec) and a mini-tracking expedition in a secured area. So that parents and children can get the most out of their safari and wilderness experience, during these activities, guiding is done in a fun participatory and easy to understand way introducing the children to animal identification, tracking and birding & animal calls. For the mini-tracking ‘expedition’ the guide will drive the family to an open and secure area to look for tracks and birds and compare them to their explorer booklets.

Following a delicious dinner at camp, your private guide leads you and your family back to your lodging.

Today is all about smoke and thunder. Well it’s about the smoke that thunders. That’s a direct translation of Mosi a Tunya, local lingo for the Victoria Falls. Your private guide collects you after breakfast, and you cross the border into Zambia and drive out to the falls. The thundering falls are an unforgettable experience and with your private guide at your side, you’ll be lead right up to the very edge where you can marvel at the brutal power of the falls close up. We had the most amazing time on our safari organized by The African Wild. Rory was attentive to every email and request. And helped us along the way with so many details that we did not even know we needed. The trip was smooth from the pickup in Maun, to the flights, and the beautiful lodges. We could not have had a better experience. Thank you!
